The Old Library of Tsinghua University, built in 1919, was designed by American architect Henry K. Murphy in the Neo-Classical style. The building features red bricks as its primary material, accented with white stone decorations, creating a simple and harmonious aesthetic. The main entrance is supported by three arched structures and classical stone columns, exuding elegance and solemnity, while incorporating elements of traditional Chinese culture to reflect a fusion of Eastern and Western architectural styles.
The Old Library once served as a key academic venue on campus, witnessing the university’s transformation from an academy to a modern educational institution. It provided students with abundant academic resources and a quiet environment for study, becoming a cultural landmark on campus. Today, the Old Library is repurposed for academic events, exhibitions, and cultural exchanges.
